The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that it is investigating the FDA’s findings, but the agency is not issuing a warning. In a letter to the FDA, FDA Commissioner Margaret Chan called the FDA’s actions “illegal and misleading.”
In April, the agency announced the recall of the drug, sold as Viagra, from three local pharmacies. The FDA said it will soon receive a letter from the company seeking approval for the recall.
A spokeswoman for the company said, “We are aware that this recall may be impacted by our investigation and response to the FDA. We are reviewing the FDA’s recommendations and will provide further action to the FDA as needed.”
In its letter to FDA, FDA said it will not “scare or prosecute this recall.”
“This recall is not a new product, but it is a potential hazard to our economy,” the FDA said in a press release.
The FDA said that the recall is a “very serious and concerning issue,” with the FDA “resorting to an increased number of adverse events related to the recall.”
In a statement, FDA spokesman Robert Ehrlich said, “Our mission is to provide safe, effective and affordable medication to consumers, and to protect the public from the risks associated with pharmaceutical sales.”
The FDA said that it has received FDA approval for the recall and that its information regarding the recall will be shared with the FDA “for the best possible outcome.”
On Tuesday, the FDA announced that it is investigating the recall, as it is the largest of several FDA-approved drugs for erectile dysfunction.
The FDA is currently working with several law enforcement agencies in an effort to identify and investigate potential tainted products and other tainted products, including those marketed as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
According to the FDA, a product with a label that includes the drug and the expiration date on the product is labeled “Sildenafil.”
In addition to the FDA, a website, a drug information sheet, a Web site and a Web site are also being investigated to identify other drugs potentially associated with the recall.
